Privacy Policy
Walkie Talkie Pro turns your phone into a push-to-talk walkie-talkie: you join a numbered channel and talk to everyone else on it. This policy explains what information the app handles, why, and the choices you have. In short: the app has no accounts and never asks for your name, email, phone number, contacts or location. Your voice is streamed live and is never recorded or stored. The app is free and shows ads from Google AdMob; the optional Pro subscription removes them.
1. Your voice
- The app uses the microphone only while you are connected to a channel (that is why your phone shows the microphone indicator). Other people hear you only while you hold the talk button; the rest of the time you are muted and any audio that reaches our server is discarded, not passed on. The app keeps running in the background while connected so you can keep hearing others.
- Your voice is sent over an encrypted connection (WebRTC, DTLS-SRTP) to our audio server, which mixes it and plays it live to the other people on the same channel. If a direct connection is not possible, the encrypted audio may pass through a relay server operated by Metered.
- Audio is not recorded, stored, transcribed or analysed by us or by anyone else.
- Channels are shared. Anyone who joins the same channel number can hear what you say. To limit who can listen, make the channel private with a PIN, and never say anything sensitive on a channel.
2. Data we store on our server
Our server (walkie-talkie.api.writai.app) stores only what is needed to run channels and
notifications:
- Device record: a push-notification token generated by Firebase (a random ID, not linked to your identity), your device model (for example "iPhone11,8"), the channel you are on, whether you are connected, and whether you want to be notified when someone talks on your channel.
- Private channels: the channel number, the PIN you set, and when it was set and expires. The PIN is deleted when the private channel expires or is reset.
- Feedback: if you rate the app or write feedback inside the app, we store the rating and the text you typed (without any identifier). Please don't include personal information in it.
- Purchases: when you buy or restore Pro, we record the price and whether it was a new purchase or a restore, without any identifier.
- Invite links: when an invite link (
walkietalkiepro.app/join/…) is opened we count it with the channel number and the platform (Android, iOS or other) taken from the browser. We do not store your IP address or full browser details, and the PIN in an invite link is kept after the#so it is never sent to our server.
Requests to our server are protected with Firebase App Check, which lets the server confirm that they come from the genuine app.
3. Data kept only on your device
Your settings, recent and favourite channels, the PIN of channels you joined, onboarding and tutorial progress, and a cached copy of your Pro status are stored in the app's private storage. On Android, if you installed the app from an invite link, the app reads the Google Play install referrer once to open that channel.
4. Notifications (Firebase Cloud Messaging)
If you allow notifications, the app uses Firebase Cloud Messaging to tell you when someone starts talking on your channel or your private channel is about to expire. You can turn channel notifications off in the app, or deny notification permission in your device settings.
5. Advertising (Google AdMob)
Free users see banner, rewarded and occasional full-screen ads served by Google AdMob. To serve, measure and limit ads and to prevent fraud, Google may collect your IP address (used for approximate location), device and app information, ad interactions and, where permitted, your device's advertising identifier.
- iPhone and iPad: the app does not ask for permission to track, so your advertising identifier (IDFA) is not shared with advertisers.
- Android: you can reset or delete your advertising ID in Settings → Google → Ads (or Settings → Privacy → Ads).
- EEA, UK and Switzerland: the app shows Google's consent message before ads are personalized.
Pro users no longer see ads and the app no longer requests them.
6. Usage statistics and crash reports (Firebase)
- Firebase Analytics receives app events (for example connected to a channel, talk button used, private channel created, ad shown, Pro screen viewed, purchase completed or restored) together with information Firebase collects automatically: a random app-instance ID, device model, OS version, app version, language, approximate country/region and session information. It never contains your voice, name, email or precise location, and Google keeps it for at most 14 months.
- Firebase Crashlytics receives crash reports (stack trace, device model, OS and app version, a random installation ID) so we can fix bugs.
- Firebase Remote Config downloads configuration values (for example how often ads may appear), using a random installation ID and basic device and app information.
7. Purchases and subscriptions
Pro is an optional auto-renewing subscription (or, on some versions, a one-time purchase) sold through the Apple App Store or Google Play. Payment is handled entirely by Apple or Google; the app never sees your payment details. It only receives the purchase status, which it uses to unlock Pro and to restore it on your other devices. You can cancel the subscription any time in your App Store or Google Play account settings.
8. Permissions
- Microphone: to send your voice to your channel while you hold the talk button (required to talk).
- Notifications: to alert you about activity on your channel (optional).
- Background audio / foreground service, battery optimisation (Android): to keep you connected and hearing others while the app is in the background.
- Internet and network state: to connect to channels, ads, analytics and configuration.
The app does not use your camera, photos, contacts or location.
9. Sharing
We do not sell your data. Data is shared only with the service providers named above (Google Firebase and AdMob, Metered for audio relaying, and Apple or Google for purchases and app reviews), always over encrypted connections. Your voice is heard by the other people on your channel.
10. Retention and deleting your data
- Your device record is kept while you use the app; disconnecting marks you as offline and uninstalling the app invalidates its notification token.
- Private-channel PINs are removed when the channel expires or is reset.
- Uninstalling the app deletes everything stored on your device.
- Because we do not collect your identity, we cannot look up data by name or email, but you can contact us with any request (see below) and we will help.
11. Children
The app is not directed at children under 13 and does not knowingly collect personal information from children. Because channels are shared with other people, children should only use the app with a parent's supervision.
12. Changes
If this policy changes, the updated version will be published on this page with a new effective date.
